Arc suppression blankets are designed to prevent injury in the following applications by doing the following:
- Keeping the arc event heat and blast from directly impacting nearby workers
- Reducing the pressure wave on the worker
- Self-extinguishing sans water or chemicals within a short time
Arc Suppression Blankets (ASBs) have multiple layers of fabric making them flexible and light enough to be in space limiting environments. The type and number of layers of fabrics is the main factor in determining its arc suppression effectiveness. External layers accommodate handling while internal ballistic layers provide strength. Depending on the ASTM rating, the ballistic layers can provide over 80% of the blanket’s strength.
The next series of articles will provide the results of ballistic material strength testing when exposed to varying levels of mechanical, chemical, and temperature stress. There are combinations of effects involving levels of stress from the above components such as folding and abrasion or time and contamination. The results of controlled testing and aging will guide the blanket user on proper storage, maintenance and inspection.
